12/22/2023 0 Comments Openscad cheat![]() The big deal is that with OpenScad you use code to create solid 3D CAD objects. OpenScad is a free and open source CAD software available for Linux, Windows and Mac. This mold also doubles as stamp, if you use a string instead of single letter when printing it out. So that's how I chose to spend my Saturday morning today - messing around with OpenScad. I wanted to create some simple play-dough molds to play with my 3 year old daughter this weekend, and while it's not hard to find such models for download out there, I always feel fascinated by using code to create 3D models and bring them to life with my printer. If you are anything like me, however, you might feel the itch to create your own models, just because. ![]() For some of us who are lucky enough to have a 3D printer at home right now, there are quite a few cool little projects that can be downloaded for free and printed at home. In these times of social isolation and quarantine, we're doing everything we can to entertain our kids and have a few moments of peace in the household. By taking advantage of 3D printing technology and textile materiality, we were able to create structures that engage the community, create a more sustainable world, and amplify the arts. How to Create Letter Molds and Stamps for 3D Printing on OpenScad Experimentation included textile bonding tests, joinery and structure development for safe public use. Through experimentation of 3D printing structural components onto textiles, we were able to create a breathable structure that mimics the folding process of traditional origami tessellations, where the textile acts as the folding plane, with the printed components allowing it to hold its form. The modular system allows the origami structures to be placed wherever necessary, but also have the ability to be connected together for larger gathering spaces. Structures were designed to be lightweight, and collapsible for quick assembly and transport. This project focused on developing temporary structures that will aid communities during this pandemic and in the future, by providing shelter from the elements, outdoor seating, and interactive pavilion spaces through a modular system of origami inspired structures. Public outdoor spaces have become a necessity for businesses, communities, and individuals who need a break from monotonous interiors.
